As we all know Valentines day is approaching. When I was in my teens my step-dad would always buy chocolate, flowers, a small teddy bear or a balloon. It was always fun to wake up in the morning and find the little gift he had left for me. The older I get the less I like the holiday. This could be due to the fact that I work at a grocery store. I work in the photo lab and part of the job description is blowing up balloons. Valentines is the biggest day for balloons. I sit there for 8 hours blowing up balloon after balloon, watching boyfriend and husbands buy balloons, flowers and chocolates for their loved ones. For alot of these men it is the only time of year they buy flowers for their significant others (besides maybe anniversaries, and birthdays). So to me v-day seems like a sorry excuse of a holiday. The gifts have no meaning when every other man in America bought his wife a dozen roses. It would seem more meaningful to me if they bought their wife flowers multiple times through out the year for no apparent reason. Even more so I believe that the best way a man can show his love is by saying the words "I love you" or by doing the dishes without being asked. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE flowers and would be thrilled to get them anytime, but Valentines has become so commercialized (along with every other major holiday) that it just seems meaningless. My tip to the gentlemen: Before going home tomorrow drop by the store and buy your wife some flowers (they don't have to be roses). but don't forget to buy her some on Valentines Day as well.
xoxo
